URINE CATHETER CULTURE (Ontario)

Test Details
Test Name : URINE CATHETER CULTURE
Alternative Test Names : CATHETER URINE C/S, FOLEY CATHETER, IN & OUT CATHETER, INDWELLING CATHETER, SUPRAPUBIC CATHETER, URINE CATHETER CULTURE
Code: 633
Test Overview : Urine Culture, including quantitation, isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing of up to two organisms if present in significant quantities (>10 x 106 CFU/L) and possible uropathogens. Cultures of specimens from catheters yielding multiple organisms with high colony counts usually represents colonization of the catheter and not true significant bacteriuria.
Test Preparation Instructions : Refers to an "in and out" catheter that is placed into the bladder solely for collection of the specimen and then withdrawn. Do not collect urine from the drainage bag when an indwelling catheter is in place because growth of bacteria can occur in the bag itself. Rather, clean catheter with an alcohol sponge, puncture with a sterile needle, and collect in sterile syringe. Catheter tips are contaminated by the urethra as they are withdrawn; do not culture them.
Turnaround Time: 1-3 DAYS

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine Catheter
Container: STERILE CONTAINER
Volume: 1.00mL

Collection Requirements: Wipe catheter port with an alcohol swab and aspirate urine with a needle and syringe. Samples from urinary drainage bags or condom catheters are not acceptable, nor are samples taken by disconnecting the catheter and allowing urine to flow into a sterile container. Aspirated urine must be transferred to a sterile container. Do not submit syringe.
Storage and Transport: Store and ship at 2°C and 8°C to lab within 24 hours of collection. Note: specimens for urine culture should be refrigerated immediately after collection and no longer than two hours. Failure to refrigerate urine specimens will result in bacterial overgrowth and inaccurate or uninterpretable results.
