If the difference between the peak glucose result
and the fasting (baseline) glucose result is
greater than 1.1 mmol/L, this suggests
normal lactose metabolism and lactose tolerance.
If the difference is less than or equal to 1.1 mmol/L,
this suggests lactose intolerance.
Note: the peak glucose result may
occur at any time point after the baseline.

Collection Requirements: Centrifuge collect the fasting specimen in a grey top tube containing sodium fluoride/ potassium oxalate. For adults, administer 50 g of lactose. Children who weigh over 25 kg or 55 lbs can also be given a 50 g dose. Children who weigh less than 25 kg or 55 lbs should be referred to a hospital for testing. Collect subsequent specimens at 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.
