GLUTATHIONE, TOTAL (National)

Test Details
Test Name : GLUTATHIONE, TOTAL
Alternative Test Names : GLUTATHIONE, TOTAL, GSH
Code: GLUT
Test Overview : Glutathione (GSH) is the primary regulator of cellular redox states. Glutathione levels are reduced in deficiencies of G6PD, GSH synthetase, and g-glutamyl-cysteine synthetase as well as lead exposure. Measurement of glutathione may be incorporated in the work-up of various hemolytic processes (e.g. neurologic enzyme evaluation, red blood cell enzyme evaluation, hemolytic anemia of obscure cause). Additionally, deficiency has been associated with oxidative stress and diseases such as Parkinson's, HIV/AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Levels may be increased in myelofibrosis and deficiency of pyrimidine-5'-nucleotidase.
