Test Overview : Alpha Thalassemia is one of the most common inherited hemoglobinopathies and can occur in all ethnic groups, but is more common in those of Southeast Asian descent . The patient should be screened first by requesting a CBC and Hemoglobin Electrophoresis. The molecular test is the follow-up to be performed to confirm Alpha Thalassemia, screening for as many as nine of the most common alpha thalassemia deletions. Methodology is Targeted PCR and Direct Sequence Analysis.

Specimen Type: Whole Blood
Container: LAV 6ML
Volume: 6.00mL

Collection Requirements: Collect 1 full large 6.0 mL LAV EDTA tube. Do not centrifuge. A completed Molecular Diagnostic Genetics Requisition must accompany the sample and can be downloaded using the link https://ltig.hrlmp.ca/AllRequisitionsHRLMP.aspx In addition, a recent CBC, ferritin, and hemoglobin electrophoresis results must accompany the sample for testing to be performed.
