The current approach for COVID-19 diagnostic testing is real-time polymerase chain reaction from a nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) sample collected by a healthcare provider. Alternate collection methods including mid-turbinate swab (MTS; i.e. ‘deep nasal’), oropharyngeal swab (OPS), anterior nasal swab (ANS), and saliva are also currently in use for many clinical diagnostic laboratories.
Dynacare and collaborating institutions have conducted one of the most comprehensive clinical studies comparing saline gargle to NPS-collected samples. The data supports the evaluated approach to collecting, processing, and testing saline gargle samples in a manner that yields consistent and accurate results when compared to NPS in adult outpatients. Our data aligns with a growing body of evidence supporting saline gargle as a viable collection strategy for COVID-19 testing.
