What is a diabetes screening test? The diabetes screening test, known as an A1C test, is a simple blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the previous two to three months. It helps identify prediabetes and diabetes early, when lifestyle changes and treatment can have the greatest impact. The process takes about five to 10 minutes and can be done at any time, regardless of when you last ate.
Are you at risk of diabetes? According to Diabetes Canada, almost 1 in 3 Canadians -- nearly 12 million people -- are living with diabetes, prediabetes, or remain undiagnosed. That number is projected to balloon by 2 million Canadians to more than 14 million by 2034. (Diabetes Canada)
Left undiagnosed and untreated, diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss, nerve damage, and circulation problems that can result in foot complications or amputation. Early detection can help individuals take action sooner, access appropriate care, and reduce the risk of these preventable complications.
Some Canadians face a higher likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes. South Asian, African, Arab, Asian, Caribbean, Hispanic, and Indigenous populations are almost twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Similarly, being over 40, physically inactive, or living with high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels or obesity, also pose higher risks. (Diabetes Canada)
A simple test today could help identify risks early, before serious complications develop. Whether you're experiencing symptoms, have a family history of diabetes, or simply want peace of mind, knowing your numbers is an important step toward protecting your long-term health.
