Dynacare has created a pathway for comprehensive hemoglobinopathy screening including molecular testing and genetic counselling for the province of Ontario.
Hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias are some of the most common single gene disorders in humans. These conditions are more common in certain ethnic groups, such as Asian, Mediterranean, African, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and South/Central American.
Approximately 5.2.% of the world’s population carries a significant hemoglobin variant1
At least 20% of the world’s population carries an alpha+ thalassemia variant1
Approximately 1 in 4 Ontarians identify as one of these ethnic groups2 and therefore may be at risk of having a child with a clinically significant blood disorder

CBC, quantitative hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis or HPLC and serum ferritin
Fill-out the Dynacare pre-completed requisition.
Upload the completed requisition to the Dynacare Requisition Uploader, our secure test ordering portal.
Patients will have up to 6 months to go to a Dynacare location. Patients can check in remotely by using the free Dynacare Net CheckIn app available in Google Play or the Apple App Store.
Result will be available in 1-4 business days.
Proceed to molecular testing if the general screening results are indicative of a possible hemoglobinopathy (see ranges below).
MCV < 80fL or MCH < 27pg AND normal Hb Electrophoresis/HPLC
MCV < 80fL and/or MCH < 27pg AND increased Hb A2 or F via Electrophoresis/HPLC
Hb variant via Electrophoresis/HPLC (e.g. HbS, HbC, HbD, HbE)
Complete the Hamilton molecular requisition.
Upload the completed requisition to the Dynacare Requisition Uploader, our secure test ordering portal along with copies of CBC, quantitative hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis or HPLC and serum ferritin.
Results will be available in 6 to 8 weeks if the patient is pregnant and up to 1 year if the patient is not pregnant.
Patients with a positive molecular test result should be offered genetic counselling.
Complete the Dynacare Hemoglobinopathy Genetic Counselling Referal Form.
Fax the completed form to 450.901.3076 along with the following documents: CBC, quantitative hemoglobin (Hb) electrophoresis or HPLC, serum ferritin and molecular test results.

Please note what language your patient prefers/is able to communicate in. For languages other than English or French, arrangements will be made to collect the family/ medical history verbally with the use of a medical translator rather than via an online questionnaire.
