Who Should Get Tested?

According to the Ministry of Health of Ontario, you can get a COVID‑19 test at an assessment centre or participating community lab if any of the following apply to you:

Symptoms and exposure

  • Currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive person (if you know when you were exposed, get tested 5 days after your last exposure and stay in self-isolation. If you do not know when you were exposed, get tested right away)
  • Received a COVID Alert app exposure notification
  • A resident or worker in a setting that has a COVID-19 outbreak, as identified by your local public health unit

Long-term care and other congregate settings

  • A visitor or worker in a long-term care home
  • A worker in a retirement home
  • A resident or worker in a homeless shelter or other congregate setting (for example, group homes, community supported living, disability-specific communities or congregate settings, short-term rehab, hospices and other shelters)


  • A farm worker


  • A person who identifies as Indigenous

Surgery and other reasons

  • Need a test before a scheduled (non-urgent or emergent) surgery in a region with high community transmission (ask your healthcare provider)
  • An international student that has passed their 14-day quarantine period
  • You received a preliminary positive result through the rapid antigen screening pilot
  • In a targeted testing group as outlined in guidance from the Chief Medical Officer of Health
  • After December 11, you will no longer be able to get a free test for outbound international travel. Private COVID-19 tests are available throughout Ontario.

You can access your results using eHealthOntario or Dynacare Plus, our digital health management portal


To access your COVID-19 results, visit

To access your results1, visit or use the Dynacare Plus app available on the Apple store and Google Play.

Existing members: simply log in with your Dynacare Plus credentials.

Non-members: create account2 on using the Dynacare Plus PIN received at your recent visit to a Dynacare location.

You will receive a 1-year complimentary membership3 with your COVID-19 test.

  1. If your results are not available on Dynacare Plus, please visit eHeathOntario
  2. To open a Dynacare Plus account, you must be 16 years old or older at the time of receiving your service at a Dynacare location.
  3. Dynacare Plus customers are eligible for up to 2 complimentary annual memberships per year. At membership renewal time, the regular rate will apply.

After a Negative Test

Do the following if you:

  • Had an exposure to COVID-19: self-isolate for 14 days from your last exposure, regardless of the result.
  • Have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days: self‑isolate for 14 days after your return, regardless of result. Self‑isolation (quarantine) is required under the federal Quarantine Act.
  • Have not had an exposure and are ill: self-isolate until you are feeling well.
  • Have not had an exposure and you are well: continue physical distancing. If you develop symptoms, self-isolate right away.


After a Positive Test

Your public health unit will ask you about:

    What symptoms have you experienced and what have been your symptoms over time?

    Examples of COVID-19 symptoms: fever (37.8 degrees C or greater), new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, change in taste or smell, nausea/ vomiting/ diarrhea/ abdominal pain, runny nose or nasal congestion.

    Where have you been in the 14 days prior to when your symptoms started or, if you don’t have symptoms, in the 14 days prior to the day you were tested?

    Make a list of places you have been and include the date, time and address.
    Examples: workplace, school/childcare/camp, places you may have stayed (rooming house, hotel etc.).

    Who were you less than 2 metres apart from within the 48 hours before you started feeling ill or, if you don’t have symptoms, in the 48 hours before you were tested?

    Practice Contact Tracing: Identify where you have been and who you were physically close to you can help to contain the spread of the virus in our community.

    Make a list of the names, phone numbers, and dates and times of last contact with anyone who:

    • lives in your home
    • works in the same place
    • has been less than 2 metres away for longer than a brief time (i.e., had a chat). Walking by someone is not considered a close contact.
